Jessamyn: /* I wish I could be there! */

UPDATE: We'll start in the Board Room on the 4th floor! Library doors open at 9 AM and bagels and coffee will be served, and we'll get started at 9:30. The agenda will go [[libcamp2008agenda|here]] once it's been created on thursday morning. See you all soon!

Library Camp doesn't mean burned marshmallows, mosquito bites, or popsicle stick-based art projects. Library Camp is a series of informal [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference Unconference] gatherings to share ideas, technologies, and discussions.

The next Library Camp will be held Thursday, March 20th, 2008, at the [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=343+south+5th+ave,+ann+arbor&sll=42.724821,-83.622437&sspn=1.077447,2.029724&ie=UTF8&ll=42.278468,-83.745968&spn=0.008478,0.015857&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1 Downtown Branch] of the [http://www.aadl.org Ann Arbor District Library], from 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM.

The goal is to get a bunch of people together, and let them talk about whatever they'd like to talk about, within the rough purview of libraries and library technology. We'll start with all getting together with a blank schedule to talk about what we'd like to talk about and fill in a few slots on the agenda. We've got time for four sessions and room for at least 3 concurrent sessions, so there could easily be 10-12 different things to talk about during the day.

We're working on providing breakfast; lunch is on your own, but there will surely be groups heading out to nearby places in downtown Ann Arbor. There is also a mid-range hotel near by ([http://campusinn.com The Campus Inn], $200/night, orbitz has for $99/night), and a very cheap place a little further out that's not half bad ([http://www.lamppostinn.com/ Lamp Post Inn], $45/night).

If you have any questions about the event, please don't hesitate to email eli at eli@aadl.org and he'll be happy to help, and if you're planning or hoping to attend, or have an idea for something you'd like to see a session about, edit this page and list your name or your suggestion! Thanks for your interest, and we hope to see you at Library Camp!

= Introduction =

Welcome to Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki. This wiki was created to be a one-stop-shop for great ideas for librarians. All over the world, librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession, but there is no one place where all of this information is collected and organized.

If you've done something at your library that you consider a success, please write about it in the wiki or provide a link to outside coverage. If you have materials that would be helpful to other librarians, add them to the wiki. And if you know of a librarian or a library that is doing something great, feel free to include information about it or links to it. Basically, if you know of anything that might be useful to other librarians (including useful websites), this is the place to put it. I hope this wiki will be a venue where people can share ideas with one another and where librarians can learn to replicate the successes of other libraries.
While I am not going to require that people register on the wiki, it would be great if you did. It makes it easier for us to identify spam and it makes the wiki much more like a community if we can get to know each other a little. When you register, you can then add to your own user profile page. Please add your profile to the [[Wiki User List]] so we can all get to know each other!
'''Note:''' If you are going to add to the list of recommended vendors or software, please put your name on your recommendation so we know that it's not from a vendor. From here on in (7/8/05), we will have to delete any '''new''' vendor/software recommendations that do not have the author identified.
Since this is a wiki, I'd like to see the people who are recommending vendors/products give some reasons for '''why''' they like that software or at least sign their edits when they add vendors. There is nothing to keep vendors from coming here and adding their own software and I'd just like to make sure these recommendations come from people who actually use and like the software.
Good idea. I'll ask people to at least sign their recommendations. -- Meredith

I was the one who added the WBC vendors; sorry about not signing my edits. I think you're right that there should be some reasoning behind why "we like" certain vendors - but there should also be some reasoning behind why "we like" IM. I didn't see that, at least not specifically labeled as such. What I do see are 3 headings for IM and only one for WBC tools (unless you count the Jybe heading), not to mention that the blog section includes mostly people who have written articles about IM, and the specific blog posts and articles all have to do with IM. While I'm in favour of IM, I don't think it's fair to present IM '''alone''' as a best practice for virtual reference. Perhaps we'd be better off changing the headings from "Software We Like" to "Web-based chat software/vendor options" and "IM software options" (making a point to differentiate between programs/networks such as AIM/MSN/Yahoo! and client options such as Gaim/Trillian/iChat). Each software option could have its own page, which would include its features, prices (if possible/relevant), a list of libraries/consortia using that software, any literature about libraries using that software, and a space for librarians to share positive and negative feedback about the software. What do you think? [[User:Rikhei|Rikhei]] 14:14, 8 July 2005 (EDT)

I think IM is a style of virtual reference that is gaining traction. I do think that a page that outlined the different tools which included the information you suggest would be an asset, and that having the software page be mostly about IM is probably something that the page will grow out of once there are more contributors.
* '''register''' - Registering lets people know who edited a page and allows all of your edits to be grouped under your name. If you are including a fact that is not widely known, sometimes a brief cite is helpful here. Check the minor edit box if you are just fixing a typo or a punctuation error.

* '''discuss''' - Every page on the wiki has a discussion page that you can use for discussing an article. This is often more useful than making an edit, having someone else undo it, and back and forth. These pages can be for asking questions about the topic, or informal coverage of a topic.

If you're brand new to the world of wikis you may be unsure how to start. Here is a quick guide with some tips. None of these are required, but many of them are helpful in creating a sense of wiki community and making the wiki more usable.

* '''register''' - Registering lets people know who edited a page and allows all of your edits to be grouped under your name. This helps you establish a reputation -- this is important on big wikis like Wikipedia, perhaps not as much here -- and lends authority to your entries and edits. If you are registered, people can contact you through your talk page if they have questions about your entries or edits. [[Special:Userlogin|You can register here]]

* '''annotate''' - You have the option of adding little notes to your edits in the Summary box beneath the editing page. When people look at pages like the [[Special:Recentchanges|Recent Changes]] page, or their own watchlist, they can tell at a glance what was done to the page you edited. If you are including a fact that is not widely known, sometimes a brief cite is helpful here.

* '''discuss''' - Every page on the wiki has a discussion page that you can use for discussing an article. This is often more useful than making an edit, having someone else undo it, and back and forth. These pages can be for asking questions about the topic, or informal coverage of a topic. This is [[Special:Userlogin|the discussion page for this page]], feel free to add to it. There are also discussion pages for all user pages, if you want to talk to a user directly. As an example, [[User_talk:Jessamyn|my talk page is here]]

* '''link''' - Please feel free to add hyperlinks and crosslinks to other wiki pages. Here is a quick and dirty guide:
**linking to another wiki page <nowiki>[[Online_Reference]]</nowiki> will get you [[Online_Reference]]

'''Anyone''' who wants to add to or edit topics on the wiki can do it. You don't need to ask before making a change -- this wiki belongs to the community of librarians who use it. If you have any technical questions about the wiki, please contact its creator, [http://meredith.wolfwater.com/contact.php Meredith Farkas]. Questions about specific content in the wiki should be directed to that individual author.
