Ideally, we can learn more from failure than we can from success. Are we (you) willing to share failures?

I know: The word itself makes you nervous. They aren't failures. They're learning experiences. They're premature innovations. They're qualified successes.

Here's the definition I'm using:
:'''Failure:'''An initiative or process that was either terminated before a planned ending date or that failed to achieve the stated goals.

Contributions? I'll create a "Failure" subcategory when (if) there are any pages that start here...
There's also a [http://pln.lyrasis.org/wiki/index.php/Learning_from_failure Learning from failure] page on the Library Leadership Network.
And, in a mere three months with publicity elsewhere, we've seen the number of shared failures I was more-or-less expecting here: Zero.

Why am I not surprised?

If the people in a library--from the director on down--can commit to producing one worthwhile blog post about the library every week, or even every month, maybe they should try to get double value: see whether a local paper would run a library column, also posted in the blog.

The background for this list appears [http://walt.lishost.org/2008/08/library-blogs-and-newspaper-columns/ in this blog post] by Walt Crawford (who wrote this page initially). (This page also appears, in slightly different form and with most or all of the background, as "Newspaper columns and blogs" in [http://pln.palinet.org the PALINET Leadership Network].)
==Known examples of newspaper columns, some mirrored elsewhere==
===Alamance County (North Carolina)===
*'''Column:''' Heather Holley-Hall writes a monthly "Accent" column for the Burlington ''Times News''--"a combination of book reviews and general ramblings about libraries, books and other related stuff." To find the column go to [http://www.thetimesnews.com/ the newspaper's website] and search for "Heather Holley-Hall" or just "Holley-Hall." The column isn't currently archived or provided as a library blog.
===Beloit Public Library (Wisconsin)===
*'''Column:''' Jeni Schomber writes a monthly library column--"book reviews and general library 'ramblings' about our services, programs, collections and such"--for the Beloit ''Daily News'', which also appears on the newspaper's [http://www.beloitdailynews.com website.] The column is archived on the [http://www.beloitlibrary.info/?pid-75 library website].
===Douglas County Libraries (Colorado)===
Jamie LaRue, director, writes a newspaper column that also appears as a library blog--and writes a separate blog.
*'''Column and blog:''' LaRue writes ''LaRue's Views'' in the Douglas County ''News Press'' and makes the columns available on what is effectively [http://www.douglascountylibraries.org/taxonomy/term/150 a blog] on the Douglas County Libraries website (it may not use blog software, but it offers items in a stream, in reverse chronological order, with support for comments and with an RSS feed).
*'''Blog:''' LaRue also, separately, writes [http://jaslarue.blogspot.com/ ''Myliblog''], a weblog that is ''not'' presented as an official library blog but ''does'' have links to the library and a link to the blog on the ''LaRue's Views'' page.
===Humboldt (Iowa)===
*'''Column:''' Nikki Ehlers writes a weekly column in [http://www.humboldtnews.com/ The Humboldt ''Independent''], but it doesn't currently show up online and isn't mirrored or archived.
===Lake Villa (Illinois)===
*'''Column formerly in newspaper:''' Bob Watson writes a [http://www.lvdl.org/ brief weekly column] that appears at the top of Lake Villa's home page. He used to have a weekly column (typical 500-750 word newspaper column length), and currently finds that the brief message works better. According to Watson, the library's PR person does a great job of getting library news and events into the local paper.
===Lancaster (Pennsylvania)===
*'''Column and archive:''' Sue Bowser writes a column, "Check it out," in the Lancaster ''Sunday News'' listing five books on a related theme. (You'll find the current version in the Books Page section of [http://lancasteronline.com/lol_pages/paper/sundaynews/ the paper's website].) The columns are archived [http://www.lancaster.lib.pa.us/lcl/cwp/view.asp?a=1152&Q=464733&lclNav=|3030 on the library's website]--but not as a blog.
===Northwest Area (Mississippi)===
*'''Column and blog:''' Maggie Moran, public service and reference librarian, writes a weekly column, ''Book Talk'', in ''The Southern Reporter'' (no website), [http://desototimes.com/ ''DeSoto Times-Tribune''], [http://thedemocrat.com/ ''Tate County Democrat''], [http://tunicatimes.com/ ''Tunica Times''], and [http://winonatimes.com/ ''Winona Times'']. The column is written on Wednesday mornings then e-mailed to the public relations staff at [http://northwestms.edu/ Northwest Mississippi Community College] (NWCC) who then forwards it to the newspapers in our service area. The column is archived on Maggie’s personal blog, [http://maggiereads.blogspot.com/ Maggie Reads.] To distinguish an article for the newspaper from regular blog posts, look for the word “copy” in parenthesis by the title of the book such as [http://maggiereads.blogspot.com/2008/10/wesley-owl-copy.html ''Wesley the Owl'' (copy)] and the tag word [http://maggiereads.blogspot.com/search/label/Booktalk/ booktalk].

===Sanbornton (New Hampshire)===
*'''Column and wiki archive:''' Cab Vinton writes ''Speaking Volumes'' in the Winnisquam ''Echo.'' The archive appears in what ''could'' be a blog--[http://splib.pbwiki.com/Speaking-Volumes-Columns/ a wiki page] that provides the columns in a newest-first stream. (Sanbornton may be unusual among very small public libraries in using a wiki as a primary communications tool.)
:How big do you need to be to have a newspaper column and blog-equivalent? Sanbornton has 2.2FTE and a service area of 2,850 people.
===Sidney (New York)===
*'''Column:''' Robin Sanford writes a weekly column, ''Off the Shelf,'' in [http://www.lvdl.org/ ''The Tri-Town News''] (which doesn't currently post content online.) The column was suggested by the paper. So far, it's not archived or available on the web or [http://www.4cls.org/sidney/smpl.htm the library's website]--but that could change.
===Townsville (Queensland, Australia)===
*'''Column and RSS feed:''' Warren Cheetham and others at the library (Citi Libraries Townsville) write ''Searchlight'', a weekly column in the IT/Computer "Switched On" section of the [http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/ Townsville ''Bulletin'']. Recent columns appear in the Switched On section of the newspaper's website, and at least two online databases pick up the column as part of the newspaper's contents. While the column appeared as part of a library blog in 2005-2006, it now has its own feed and email distribution, [http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/info/publib/news/lists/hosted/searchlight described here], with archives available once you've signed up. According to Cheetham,
:The aim of Searchlight is: "to help make your internet searching more effective, efficient and fun, by reviewing search tools, providing hints and tips, and helping with tricky search topics." Our aim was to take the search expertise of librarians, and make it available to a wide audience in a medium they regularly use (newspaper), using language that they understand.
*Possibly inspired by my question, it appears that [http://searchlightblog.blogspot.com/ the Searchlight blog] has been revived, so this column now counts as a true column-and-blog combination once again.

==Unable to clarify==
At j. Baumgart's request, members of the News Division of the Special Libraries Association identified three newspaper columns by librarians, but I have not been able to identify the column in any online form or any reference to it from the library website:
*Savannah ''Morning News'', a fortnightly Sunday column
*Columbus ''Dispatch'', a monthly reference column (that may not be by librarians)
*Providence ''Journal'', an as-space-available column.
If anyone can fill in the links or clarify these, please do so (or send me email, waltcrawford at gmail.com)
==Additions to the list==
Please add appropriate information if you (or your library) writes a newspaper column--including where it's archived, if it is. Or send email to waltcrawford at gmail.com and I'll update this page...

Library Camp doesn't mean burned marshmallows, mosquito bites, or popsicle stick-based art projects. Library Camp is a series of informal [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference Unconference] gatherings to share ideas, technologies, and discussions.

The next Library Camp will be held Thursday, March 20th, 2008, at the [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=343+south+5th+ave,+ann+arbor&sll=42.724821,-83.622437&sspn=1.077447,2.029724&ie=UTF8&ll=42.278468,-83.745968&spn=0.008478,0.015857&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1 Downtown Branch] of the [http://www.aadl.org Ann Arbor District Library], from 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM.

[[Libcamp2008agenda]]

The goal is to get a bunch of people together, and let them talk about whatever they'd like to talk about, within the rough purview of libraries and library technology. We'll start with all getting together with a blank schedule to talk about what we'd like to talk about and fill in a few slots on the agenda. We've got time for four sessions and room for at least 3 concurrent sessions, so there could easily be 10-12 different things to talk about during the day.

We're working on providing breakfast; lunch is on your own, but there will surely be groups heading out to nearby places in downtown Ann Arbor. There is also a mid-range hotel near by ([http://campusinn.com The Campus Inn], $200/night, orbitz has for $99/night), and a very cheap place a little further out that's not half bad ([http://www.lamppostinn.com/ Lamp Post Inn], $45/night).

If you have any questions about the event, please don't hesitate to email eli at eli@aadl.org and he'll be happy to help, and if you're planning or hoping to attend, or have an idea for something you'd like to see a session about, edit this page and list your name or your suggestion! Thanks for your interest, and we hope to see you at Library Camp!

The background for this list appears [http://walt.lishost.org/2008/08/library-blogs-and-newspaper-columns/ in this blog post] by Walt Crawford (who wrote this page initially). ==Known examples of newspaper columns, some mirrored elsewhere==
===Alamance County (North Carolina)===
===Douglas County Libraries (Colorado)===
===Humboldt (Iowa)===
*'''Column:''' Nikki Ehlers writes a weekly column in [http://www.humboldtnews.com/ The Humboldt ''Independent''], but it doesn't currently show up online and isn't mirrored or archived.
===Lake Villa (Illinois)===
===Lancaster (Pennsylvania)===
===Sanbornton (New Hampshire)===
===Sidney (New York)===
===Townsville (Queensland, Australia)===

==Unable to clarify==
==Additions to the list==
= Introduction =

Welcome to Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki. This wiki was created to be a one-stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians. All over the world, librarians are developing successful programs and doing innovative things with technology that no one outside of their library knows about. There are lots of great blogs out there sharing information about the profession, but there is no one place where all of this information is collected and organized. That's what we're trying to do.

If you've done something at your library that you consider a success, please [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing write about it in the wiki] or provide a link to outside coverage. If you have materials that would be helpful to other librarians, add them to the wiki. And if you know of a librarian or a library that is doing something great, feel free to include information or links to it. Basically, if you know of anything that might be useful to other librarians (including useful websites), this is the place to put it. I hope this wiki will be a venue where people can share ideas with one another and where librarians can learn to replicate the successes of other libraries.

This wiki is not run by any commercial entity and does not represent any commercial interests. Please familiarize yourself with the license before using any of the content on your own site.

'''Anyone''' who wants to add to or edit topics on the wiki can do it. You don't need to ask before making a change -- this wiki belongs to the community of librarians who use it. If you have any technical questions about the wiki, please contact its creator, [http://meredith.wolfwater.com/contact.php Meredith Farkas]. Questions about specific content in the wiki should be directed to that individual author.
Check out the [[Categories|alphabetized list of categories]] with alphabetized lists of articles in each category.

If you add a new category, please add it to this list on the main page so people can easily find it. You can also add new pages off of the pages in each category (subpages). For example, if you want to go into depth with a "success story" about gaming, you can create another page for the details on the success story and just put a little teaser or title on the gaming page (with a link).

''You can easily add a new page by putting the title of the new page inside double brackets on the front page (you can see the formatting when you go to edit this page). Then, when you click on that link, you will be taken to a new page that you can add to.''
