Introduction

This page is about managing the information of the World Social Forum. It focusses on the seventh WSF Event in Nairobi, Kenya, 20-25 January 2007. Background to the librarians' preparations is found on the website of the Network Institute for Global Democratization, NIGD. If interested, please subscribe to the related mailing list.

As a part of the preparations towards the Nairobi WSF, Information for Social Change has published a special issue on 'Libraries and Information in the World Social Forum Context', which contains, for instance, an article on The Management of the WSF Information by Esther Obachi, the secretary of Kenya Library Association. This article explains how the information from the WSF can be managed for posterity.

Classification and cataloguing

It is my contention that most of the material or information to be collected relating to the WSF will essentially be ephemeral or the grey literature sort of material. This is for most LIS managers and staff a difficult type of material to trace, organise and use. In this regard i would suggest that a simple method of classifying and cataloguing it should be used for the good both of the library staff and the users.

Classification therefore could be modelled on the bases of subject categories such that you have broad subject categories and sub-topics within each broad subject category.

         Subtopics: child ause; child labour; child molestation; street children  etc

Librarians are expected to use a variety both electronic and print media to disseminate WSF information. The Print media:This include various publications such as newpapers

Publicity

The major marketing strategies for the WSF information will include: radio, tv, newspapers, workshops, websites and individual contacts.
